Rise And Shout

Most Cougar fans have heard the fight song often known as "Rise And Shout" countless number of times. How many of us know where it originated from? Or who wrote it? Did you know that it wasn't the ONLY song the Cougars have had in its rich history? Back in 1899 Annie Pike Greenwood wrote "The College Song" which for numerous years served as the school until Clyde D. Sandgren (a 1932 BYU graduate) composed the song. In 1947 Clyde registered the Cougar song with the US Copyright Office and more recently (in 1975) renewed the work's copyright registration. It was dedicated especially "To all BYU students who so valiantly served their country in World War II". He served later at the University as general counsel, a vice president and for four years as the Alumni Association president. Sandgren passed away in 1989 and left ownership and the rights of the song to his son. Only Dee and BYU have the rights to the song. Clyde had also penned the school songs for Timpview High School, Orem High School, Provo High School, Utah Valley University and even composed the fight song for St Johns (Sandgren received his law degree there). So the next time you hear...

Rise, all loyal Cougars and hurl your challenge to the foe.
You will fight, day or night, rain or snow.
Loyal, strong and true
Wear the white and blue
While we sing, get set to spring.
Come on, Cougars, it's up to you!

(Chorus)
Rise and shout, the Cougars are out,
along the trail to fame and glory
Rise and shout, our cheers will ring out,
As you unfold your vict'ry story
On you go to vanquish the foe for Alma Mater's songs and daughters
As we join in song in praise of you our faith is strong
We'll raise out colors high in the blue
and cheer our Cougars of BYU!

...take a few minutes to remember and thank those who went before, even created the fight song you are singing as you cheer your Cougars on to victory!
